We Said

Football Development Manager Peter Beardsley spoke to the official website and said:

"To be fair to (York), they started off really well and put us under pressure. At 1-0 at half time, they were definitely the better team, without a shadow of a doubt.

"But I think for most of the second half we were camped out in their half. Having got the goal early in the second half, you're hoping that you're going to go on and win.

"I think a few of our lads were getting a bit frustrated. There were a few tackles flying in, but that's men's football.

With all due respect to York - Jackie
(McNamara, manager) is a good man, Simon (Donnelly, assistant manager) is a good man - it is going to be physical for them, and they have to do that sometimes.

"Fair play to York - they played some good football at times, and from their point of view, it was a good goal.

"They were men, and with all due respect they're fighting for their lives in terms of playing in the National League and then hopefully back in the league, so we always knew it would be our toughest test.

"So in that sense it's worked out perfectly. We've had four good games leading up to this, but this was definitely the stiffest test.

"I think overall, 1-1 was probably a fair result and it was a good test for York in terms of next week, getting ready for the National League, and good for us going forward."

While the first team were in action at Gallowgate on Saturday, United's reserve side maintained their own unbeaten pre-season run at Bootham Crescent - going one better than their senior team colleagues, who lost by the odd goal in three 12 months ago.

Fresh from winning the Steel Cup at Corby the previous weekend, Peter Beardsley named a strong starting XI including six players with first team experience in the shape of Kevin Mbabu, Gael Bigirimana, Callum Roberts, Alex Gilliead, Haris Vuckic and Ivan Toney.

There was a return to his club for defender Kyle Cameron (named as Captain today), who spent last season on loan at City as they made an unsuccessful attempt to preserve their league status.

Fellow York loan defender Lubo Satka didn't feature however, while trialist forward Flavio Da Silva was also nowhere to be seen.

Having won just one of their five warm-up games, Aidan Connolly's strike gave the National League Minstermen a deserved half time lead over a lack-lustre Newcastle side who created little and saw one hopeful penalty appeal from Callum Roberts rightly refused.

Magpies defender Stuart Findlay was credited with equalising from a Roberts corner three minutes into the second half, although a home player got a significant touch en route to the back of the net.

United did have chances to win it after that point, but Bigirimana's long range effort flew narrowly wide and home custodian Luke Simpson was equal to shot from both Cameron and Toney.
