We Said

Peter Beardsley:

"It's really disappointing. I said to their coach before the game about how we struggle to play at home. I don't know what it is - if it's the stadium, the pressure of being at home, I don't know what it is - but we haven't really played really well at this stadium in the last two years.

"I don't know if it's a big lift for the opposition, which in some ways it maybe has been for the first team games. Brighton won fair and square. We lost our shape, lost our enthusiasm if you like, and we could've lost by more.

"They shouldn't be overawed here in the sense that they've played here a lot now. Nathan's probably the only one that hasn't actually played at the stadium before, so they shouldn't be. Having been to the Emirates on Friday and the Liberty last week, it should be something that they get used to, and have to get used to.

"Some of them are getting to 19, 20, and obviously they have to be able to stand on their own two feet and play for themselves.

"To be fair to Brighton, they took advantage of our mistakes. Probably three of the four goals were our fault, but they took advantage and won easily in the end.

"Luke scored a great goal. It was a brilliant clean strike, and I thought in the first in particular he was our best player. I thought he worked really hard, did some good things, some good lay-offs and passes.

"In the second half I think, through no fault of his own, we couldn't get him the ball, and I think in some ways he was probably trying too hard. But overall, he can be pleased with what he's done and he scored a brilliant goal."

A second string season that has veered between average and pathetic came to a suitably rotten conclusion at St. James' Park on Monday night.

With Rafa Benitez opting not to utilise any senior squad players, United's "development side" were tasked with ending a six game winless sequence against the only side below them in the table.

Sadly though, the losing culture that has come to characterise this football club came to the fore yet again as the Seagulls recorded only their second victory in 21 games this season at a canter.

Ahead on 11 minutes through Jack Harper's deflected shot, that lead was doubled barely a minute later when Joe Ward volleyed in from close range.

The black and whites hit straight back when striker Luke Charman blasted home from just inside the box.

Sadly though that was as good as it got for the home side, with Charman shooting narrowly over after the break and Callum Roberts missing the target with a trio of half-chances before injury forced him off.

United's best chance of the second period fell to defender Jamie Cobain just after the hour mark, but Seagulls custodian Christian Walton tipped over a rising effort for a corner we inevitably wasted.

Albion restored their two goal cushion on 73 minutes when James Tilley won a one-on-one with 'keeper Nathan Harker and our humiliation was complete 13 minutes from time when Jonah Ayunga strode past a static Magpies defence before netting. Pitiful.

PS: It's undeniable that Newcastle's decision to loan reserve players out to Football League clubs this season had an adverse effect on their U21 results.

However, that loan policy is common practice among clubs in their U21 league; Monday night's victors Brighton have five young players out currently.
