Winless
in five games, Newcastle's U21s travelled to the Emirates Stadium and fell behind on seven minutes when Dan Crowley dribbled past a trio
of defenders before stabbing home from close range.
And barely a minute later Stephy Mavididi burst through the visiting defence
before slipping a low shot under the advancing Nathan Harker for 0-2.
Harker did better midway through the first half though, rushing off his line
to deny Mavididi from a similar position after he was set away by Serge Gnabry.
With the home side still readjusting after an enforced substitution, United
got off the mark in the 27th minute thanks to an own goal from Krystian Bielik.
Sylvain Marveaux pushed forward in possession and released Owen Gallacher down
the left before sending over a low left wing cross that was prodded home at
the near post by the home defender.
And both Marveaux and Liam Gibson then made their way into the box in quick
succession, but couldn't manage to test home 'keeper Matt Macey.
Normal service was resumed on 34 minutes though as Gnabry drove home
powerfully from the left side of the box to make it 3-1 to the Arsenal.
Newcastle were forced into a replacement of their own before the break when
Owen Gallacher was unable to continue and made way for Sean Longstaff.
Chances arrived at both ends, with Marveaux and Charman combining well on the
edge of the Arsenal box, although the latter blasted his shot over.
The Frenchman's only senior goal for United came on this ground and he brought
a stop out of Macey in the 51st minute after an astute pass from Callum
Roberts.
From that point though the game declined as a spectacle and meandered to a
close with Saivet's deflected free kick and Dan Barlaser's late shot into the
side netting the only United incidents of note.
