We Said

Steve McClaren said:

"We’ve had three good days and worked very hard.

"We finished with the game and it was good for people to get minutes. Everybody had a good attitude and put in good effort. It’s nice for the boys to win.

"
It’s been very worthwhile, and very important to come away. We got away and got into a different environment.

"We got the lads together, and you’re living with each other 24-7. There has been a lot of talking and a lot of work, and it’s been enjoyable too. Their attitudes have always been very, very good.

"We’ve talked about not getting too high when we win, and when we lose a game, let’s not get too low. Other people can, but we can’t. We try to level things out and make sure we train hard.

"Vurnon (Anita) and Siem (de Jong) will be back in full training on Tuesday, and it was the same with Jack Colback - he had a little niggle, so we didn’t risk that. They will train this week, and get ready for the last 12 games.

"The weather was not ideal, it was blowing a gale. The pitch was also lively so it was difficult conditions but it’s good to get a win.

"It was a good work out and we got game-time for others.

"It was a great start to the game but we were a little bit sloppy after that and it wasn’t a good goal to concede. But we came back in the second half.

"We said in the second half let’s play a bit more direct because of the conditions. We did that and Rolando (Aarons) popped up with a good goal. He was lively when he came on.”

They Said

LSK boss Runar Kristinsson:

"I'm very pleased (with the performance) but annoyed to lose, obviously - I do not think the result is fair. We had several chances. Newcastle is in the middle of the season, while we have a month left (of pre-season) , so I'm happy with this.

"We watched a video of Newcastle from when they played on a level surface and they went very fast. But they did not do that today and it became difficult on a slightly bumpy pitch in the wind.

"I will give praise to my players. We worked hard, were well organized and ran a lot. This was fantastic training for us.

"I said before the match that there was one man who did not actually dream of playing in England, and it's Frode
(Kippe). He has done that and know what it is about. And it's probably a little late for him to get the chance now!

Stats

Gini Wijnaldum scored his first club goal away from Gallowgate in 14 games, since a pre-season strike at Sheffield United.

Lillestrøm finished eighth in the 2015 Eliteserien and along with five other clubs from that league were at La Manga preparing for their opening game in the 2016 league on Sunday March 13th.

They have Newcastlepreviously in the 2006/07 Intertoto Cup, with a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park followed by a 3-0 win in Norway that ensured our UEFA Cup qualification.

Steven Taylor was the sole Newcastle survivor, having started both. For the opposition, fellow defender Frode Kippe played in the away leg in 2006 and featured today. The former Liverpool and Stoke City defender is now aged 38.

United rounded off their "warm weather" training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga with victory over their Norwegian opponents on Saturday afternoon.

Clad in their blue change kit, the Magpies took a third minute lead when Gini Wijnaldum took a pass from Ayoze Perez and evaded 'keeper Arnold Origi before shooting into an empty net.

That was the first club goal away from Gallowgate that the Dutchman has managed in 14 games, since a pre-season strike at Sheffield United.

However Lillestrom were level five minutes later through Lebanese midfielder Bassel Jradi's effort from 15 yards after United failed to clear their lines.

The former Blackburn Rovers trialist then shot wide and saw another effort saved by Karl Darlow as the Norwegians looked bright despite having not played competitively since their season ended in November.

Into the second half and Jradi again found a good position to shoot on 55 minutes, but missed the target. He did better a minute later, but Freddie Woodman was able to get his body in the way.

Newcastle's winner arrived with 15 minutes remaining, Rolando Aarons meeting a right wing cross from fellow substitute Jamie Sterry with a looping header after a quickly-taken free kick by Perez.

Late chances to add some gloss to the final score were then spurned by both Perez and Emmanuel Riviere, with Lillestrom feeling disappointed at not forcing a draw despite creating more chances.

Seydou Doumbia completed 90 minutes for United, but aside from one long range effort that lacked power the on-loan striker kept a very low profile.

Jonjo Shelvey captained the side, passing on the armband to Steven Taylor when he was replaced.

Six members of the squad weren't selected: Elliot, Dummett, Anita, Colback, De Jong and Tiote, while ten others didn't travel: Cisse, Haidara, Krul, Marveaux, Mbabu, Mbemba, Mitrovic, Obertan, Roberts, Toney.

PS: Fabricio Coloccini was an unused substitute but is reported to have acquired a calf injury during a post-match warm-down - quite how remains open to question, but the prospect of losing the captaincy to Jonjo Shelvey on more than just a one match basis may yet be a contributory factor.

Many thanks to the intrepid GW for updates.
