We Said

Peter Beardsley:

"It's easy in hindsight, but we've seen it and it wasn't a red card.

"It's a double-whammy because you get the penalty against you and then the sending off. I'm not blaming the referee - they make mistakes, it happens - but it killed the game as a spectacle.

"Most of the people in the crowd probably thought 'this could be three, four, five', but fair play to the kids - they stuck at it. (Jamaal) Lascelles led them from the back; when we went to three at the back, he organised them very well.

"In terms of the effort, I couldn't fault our players. I thought they were magnificent. Karl (Darlow) made some good saves, as you would expect when you're down to ten men, but it the end we were disappointed that we didn't hang on for a draw.

"I keep saying that results don't matter (at under-21 level) but they deserve more than that for their effort and their attitude and I'm disappointed for them in the end.

"But they were outstanding and I think everyone in the dressing room realises that. As much as you're disappointed for them, you're also proud of them.

"It's frustrating, because we were only going to give him half a game anyway.

"But it's an experience. Next time, will he make the tackle to give the referee a decision?

"I knew by Jamie's reaction that it wasn't a penalty but sadly it's part of the game and it'll do him good in the long run. It just won't feel like it at the moment."

Debutant Doumbia

A Magpies side boasting Karl Darlow, Jamaal Lascelles and Seydou Doumbia lost at Gallowgate on Monday night after playing for most of the game a man short.

The biggest home reserve crowd since 2012 saw United fall behind in the eleventh minute, when home defender Jamie Sterry fouled Oliver Shenton in the box at the Leazes End.

Referee Andrew Miller gave a penalty and dismissed the defender for denying a goalscoring opportunity, Dominic Telford stepping up to shoot under Darlow.

City came close to a second soon after when Sergio Molina Beloqui's 25-yard effort struck a post, before United levelled from the spot on 21 minutes.

Eddy Lecygne barged over Callum Roberts and Dan Barlaser beat 'keeper Daniel Gyollai from 12 yards to register his second goal of the campaign.

Stoke continued to make their man advantage count, Darlow denying Telford a second on the half hour. Telford then turned provider in the last minute of the half, but George Waring headed wide.

Doumbia was replaced by Lewis McNall at the interval, failing to make any impression in his first game since signing off for CSKA Moscow on December 8th.

Liam Gibson blocked a Waring header with his head in the 68th minute and the Potters remained in the ascendancy and began to dominate possession, with Darlow doing well to deny Liam Edwards with a magnificent one-handed save.

Darlow made two more good stops but Stoke's pressure finally brought dividends in the form of a 77th minute wonder strike from full back Lewis Banks that flew high into the net from the angle of the box.

United were unable to respond to that and City completed a league double, although Peter Beardsley's side made a reasonable fist of playing with a man short.
