United bowed out of the U21 Premier
League Cup on Thursday in dramatic fashion, seemingly forcing extra time
with a late leveller - only to then concede again and send the Toffees into
the last 16.
Coach Peter Beardsley included fit-again Rolando Aarons, Emmanuel Riviere and
Sylvain Marveaux at Southport's Haig Avenue - Aarons playing his first game
since September and the French duo kicking a ball in anger for the first time
this season.
It didn't take Riviere long to mark his return, beating Toffees
custodian Louis Gray from close range within the opening minute of play.
However, the Blues were level within ten minutes, after Callum Connolly beat
Freddie Woodman to a centre and his knockdown was converted by Uruguayan
forward Leandro Rodriguez.
Newcastle regained the lead on 26 minutes, when Aarons was fouled in the area
and the resultant spot kick was scored by Marveaux.
Everton levelled for the second time though barely two minutes after the
interval when midfielder Joe Williams shot home from distance.
And David Unsworth's side took the lead for the first time in the tie with
fourteen minutes remaining thanks to a Callum Connolly header from a cross by Kieran
Dowell.
United then replied in the 89th minute through Callum Roberts - only
for Everton to make it 4-3 almost straight away when substitute Courtney
Duffus bundled Harry Charsley's low centre into the net.
