Newcastle's reserve side lost their unbeaten
home league record for the season at St.James' Park on Monday, after conceding
a goal deep into added time.
A 93rd minute header from Austin Lipman settled an entertaining contest in
favour of the visitors, although the Magpies held on to pole position in the
U21 Second Division table - ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.
The Gunners started the brighter of the two sides, striker Daniel Crowley
prodding a fifth minute chance wide when the opening goal of the game looked
inevitable.
It took 35 minutes for visiting goalkeeper Dejan Iliev to be tested, reaching
Adam Armstrong's rising shot after the striker took a pass from Callum
Williams and turned away from his marker.
Within 90 seconds though Arsenal were in front though, Nigerian-born youngster
Alex Iwobi with a weaving run and shot that Freddie Woodman got a hand to, but
couldn't keep out of the Gallowgate End net.
A minute later what looked like a stamp from a visiting player led to a
general fracas on the halfway line, with Williams and his opposite number Glen
Kamara both going into the book after squaring up to each other.
A more fluent display from United after the break saw them push Arsenal back,
Armstrong sending a first time shot wide on 52 minutes after fellow striker
Tom Heardman headed down Adam Laidler's deep cross.
But just three minutes later the black and whites were deservedly level, Dan
Barlaser shooting past a crowd of players in the area for a timely third goal
of the season - the midfielder signing his first professional deal today.
Proceedings were then disrupted by the first of two pitch invasions, a male
teenager taking to the field from the East Stand for no apparent reason.
What proved to be United's best chance of going ahead arrived on 74 minutes,
when a poor clearance from Iliev fell at the feet of Heardman outside the
Arsenal box.
With defenders closing him down and Iliev frantically back-pedalling,
Heardman's low first-time return shot sadly beat the 'keeper but also the far
post.
After another teenage interloper inexplicably sauntered on before being led
away, Arsenal enjoyed their best period of the second half in the closing ten
minutes.
Woodman looked to have saved his side when blocking efforts from both Aaron
Eyoma and Renny Smith after 87 minutes, but was beaten three minutes into
added time.
There were echoes of Peter Crouch's last-gasp goal on Sunday, substitute Aaron
Eyoma centring from the right for Lipman glance home a header at the Leazes
End.
Referee Glen Hart gave United a chance by playing six and a half minutes of
additional time, but despite some late pressure a second equaliser never
materialised.
PS: Aside from Armstrong, the only Magpie with any competitive first
team experience involved was Curtis Good, the defender continuing his comeback
from injury.
There was no place for recovering first teamers Siem De Jong, Ryan Taylor or
Rolando Aarons, Olivier Kemen was serving a suspension, Greg Olley injured and
alleged forward Facundo Ferreyra nowhere to be seen.
Jonas Gutierrez was spotted en route from Newcastle to Heathrow on Saturday,
while the departure of a quartet of players on loan to Rangers and two over
the river at Gateshead also altered the squad composition.
