Newcastle's second string racked up their
largest win in the Northumberland Senior Cup since 2007 on Tuesday evening,
advancing to the Semi-Finals without incident at the expense of their Northern
League opponents.
A sparse crowd at Whitley Park saw all three of United's substitutes mark
their competitive U21 debut by netting - Sean Longstaff taking centre stage
with a hat trick and both Dan Ward and Stefan Broccoli getting off the mark.
Beaten just once in eight U21 Premier League games this season, Peter
Beardsley's side took a seventh minute lead when a snap shot from Alex Gilliead
on the edge of the area evaded Team North custodian Andrew Jennison.
Greg Olley then doubled the advantage five minutes later, guiding home
his effort from similar range via a slight deflection off defender Ben
Murdock.
Having caught the eye in Thursday's win over Stoke City, injury forced off
winger Callum Roberts before he had the chance to inflict further damage on
the Students. However, substitute Longstaff quickly made his presence felt, latching on to a
wayward back pass before heading into the box and walking the ball into an
empty net - just three minutes after taking to the field.
Currently top of the Second Division, Team North then enjoyed their best
period of the tie, both Murdock and Joel Bradley placing efforts wide from
good positions.
Any thoughts they entertained of making a game of it evaporated though after
48 seconds of the second period, Haris Vuckic surging forward and laying off a pass
for Longstaff to convert with a rising shot.
It was then 5-0 on 48 minutes as 17 year-old Ward profited from
Gilliead's pull back, before Longstaff completed his treble twenty minutes later, meeting
Liam Gibson's left wing centre to volley in from close range.
16 year-old Broccoli then became the third scoring substitute when he touched
home in the 88th minute to make it 7-0.
With the last action of the game, the visitors were denied a consolation goal
when goalkeeper Paul Woolston made a fingertip stop to divert a shot from
Matthew Fish.
