The unused substitute
for NUFC was Academy goalkeeper Carl Robinson.
Newcastle U21s concluded their pre-season preparations on Wednesday evening with
a deserved defeat at the hands of last season's Northern League Champions.
The Brewers begin life in the Northern Premier League on Saturday and were ahead
after just six minutes. A long punt upfield from Spenny's trialist goalkeeper
tempted opposite number Freddie Woodman to the edge of his box - only to then
lose track of the ball and leave home striker Gavin Cogdon to shoot home into an
empty net.
United equalised in the 14th minute when a ball was played across the home area
and when a defender mistimed a clearance, it fell to the unmarked Tom Heardman
who had an easy chance to shoot home.
Moors regained the lead on 57 minutes when ex-Magpie reserve, Dan Taylor, was on
hand to knock home at the back post after both goalkeeper and defenders failed
to clear a ball as it travelled across the face of goal.
Stephen Capper had claimed an assist for that goal and just two minutes later
another centre from him out on the left was headed home at the near post by
Craig Lynch.
The introduction of Jonathyn Quinn and Greg Olley at that point made only
marginal difference to United's powder puff attack and they went further behind
with eleven minutes of normal time remaining.
Another Spenny foray down the left exposed the United
defence and Michael Roberts made it to the byline before advancing on goal and
shooting beyond Woodman to complete a lousy night for Peter Beardsley's side.
