Assistant manager
Colin Myers:
“Yes, it was a very good performance but, to be honest conceding two late
goals has left a bitter taste in the mouth. We allowed crosses to come in and
paid the price. It was poor defending.
"However our passing and movement matched Newcastle’s at least. We have
some great players here-that’s why we brought them in. We want to play in a
certain way and have the opposition chasing the ball. We even had Newcastle
doing that in spells. So, yes in terms on open play we were absolutely brilliant
but we still need to work on our defending. I think we’ve conceded five goals
at the back post this pre-season. We’ve either not stopped the crosses coming
in or we’ve not been marking tightly enough.
“It was a great game to watch. We could have been two or three up in the first
half but it’s got to be said that both goalkeepers were excellent. I just hope
our fans, and Newcastle’s, enjoyed it and get back to Croft Park again soon to
support us.”
A hastily-arranged friendly meeting between last season's Northumberland Senior
Cup finalists on Friday night saw United run out winners again, but their
non-league hosts pressed them all the way and didn't deserved to lose.
The Blyth side beaten 0-4 at SJP back in May had played three games in six days
to conclude a punishing season and were never really in the contest that night.
Three months on though and a revitalised Spartans took the game to Newcastle
from the off, with some crisp and imaginative passing prompted by midfield Paul
Robinson (the former Whitley Bay player, not the ex-Magpie).
On wet night at Croft Park, the green and whites forced visiting goalkeeper
Freddie Woodman to made a trio of decent first half stops and Arran Wearmouth
also hit the woodwork as the first half ended 0-0.
For the Magpies, striker Tom Heardman twice came close while Greg Olley -
playing in a right wing back role - was denied by the trailing foot of custodian
Peter Jeffries. Meanwhile, ex-Newcastle reserve midfielder Ben Sayer and right back Alex Nicholson both
caught the eye for Blyth.
Into the second period and Blyth made noticeably less headway as sole striker
Dan Maguire was outnumbered and often lacking support. United went in front on
62 minutes when Heardman finished from close range
after Shane Ferguson progressed down the left and centred to the front post.
Ferguson's rick led to a Blyth equaliser after 76 minutes though, the Northern
Ireland international losing out to former Magpie Chris Moore, who crossed from
right for Robbie Dale to head home at the back post.
That was no more than the home side deserved, with Dale and Robinson guilty of a
couple of glaring misses. However Blyth fell behind again with seven minutes to
play, when Liam Smith's pull-back from the left byline found Greg Olley unmarked
to head down and in.
Back came Blyth and some over-elaboration from Olivier Kemen in the final minute
saw him lose out to substitute Jarrett Rivers, who promptly struck an absolute
beauty into the top left hand corner from 25 yards.
United were to have the final say though in the second minute of added time,
when two home defenders failed to clear Jonathyn's centre, Smith hammering the
loose ball home to claim the victory.
