Newcastle's
reserves bounced back from Friday's 2-5 reverse at Anfield to record their first
U21 league success of 2014 on Wednesday night - and finally overcome the Red
Devils' second string on Tyneside at the sixth time of asking.
After a very quiet first half, Remi Streete netted his first goal at this
level in over two years within five minutes of the restart. The powerfully-built
central defender calmly side-footed the ball home after being put through by
Alex Gilliead at a very soggy Whitley Park.
Injury and international call-ups meant that the Magpies handed a debut to
15-year old goalkeeper Paul Woolston within a week of his first competitive
appearance for the U18 side. And the rookie custodian pulled off a fine save to
ensure the Magpies claimed all three points in the 75th minute, palming a
swerving free-kick onto the bar with Andreas Pereira putting the rebound over.
