Newcastle's reserve side
extended their losing run in 2014 to five league and cup matches at Ewood Park
on Monday night - as bottom of the table Blackburn won for only the second time
this season.
Rovers took just 12 minutes to go ahead, Paulo Jorge and Hyuga Tanner swapping
passes before the Portuguese midfielder netted from 20 yards with a right footed
shot that went in via the underside of the crossbar.
Attempting to get back into the game, the yellow-clad Magpies looked in vain for
a penalty in the 24th minute when Rolando Aarons jinked into the Rovers box
before shooting wide, just as Fernandez looked to trip him.
The equaliser wasn't long in arriving though, with Adam Armstrong providing a
fine through ball to Aarons, who strode into the area before shooting across
Simon Eastwood in off the post for his second U21 goal of the season.
Rovers went ahead ten minutes into the second period after Michael Richardson
charged down a volleyed effort following a corner. The ball was then played back
in and Jordan Preston headed past Jonathan Mitchell.
With Gael Bigirimana's comeback lasting just over an hour, United were forced to
make a second change soon after when Liam Gibson was hurt following a melee in
the box.
After lengthy treatment, the youngster was stretchered off and replaced by
fellow Academy defender Ryan McKinnon, who made his competitive debut at this
level, becoming the 42nd player we've used in 15 league games this season.
Mitchell then made a super stop from close range to deny Jordan Preston his
second of the night, before a great covering challenge from Jamie Sterry blocked
a Jorge effort with three minutes of normal time to play.
Referee McDermott indicated nine minutes of additional time before Mitchell did
well to tip over an effort from recently-arrived home substitute Luke Wall.
Adding youngster Callum Roberts to the mix for Peter Beardsley's side failed to
improve their fortunes though and Rovers were full value for their victory.
