Newcastle's
second string overcame a stubborn City side at Whitley Park on Monday evening to
claim a place in the Quarter Finals of the inaugural U21 Premier League Cup.
A goal in each half from England youth international forward Adam Armstrong
ultimately killed off the Foxes - although a late strike from Adam Dawson made
for a slightly nervous finale as City tried to force extra time.
Leicester served notice of their attacking intentions when Dawson shot wide just
50 seconds after the first whistle and United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick made a
reflex stop to deny Harry Panayiotou midway through the opening half.
Armstrong tested visiting custodian Adam Smith on 32 minutes, making a diagonal
run to get on the end of Alex Gilliead's through ball. The Toon youngster made
the breakthrough just seven minutes later though, Gael Bigirimana charging down
an attempted clearance which fell to Jonas Gutierrez. He in turn released a
perfect ball for Arma to take a touch before confidently shooting home.
Into the second half and the Foxes continued to get men forward at every
opportunity, Curtis Good making a vital clearance after 47 minutes when Robert
Paratore left Alnwick stranded in the box and shot towards goal.
Armstrong's second goal of the night appeared to have sealed the win with twelve
minutes remaining, Leicester forcing two corners and striking the woodwork
before Newcastle profited from a rapid counter attack.
Recently-arrived substitute Tom Heardman broke over halfway down the left hand
channel before teeing up Armstrong, who had timed his run perfectly to fire in.
City got a belated foothold in the game got a goal back with three minutes
remaining, Dawson beating Alnwick from an acute angle.
The United 'keeper then parried another shot in the final seconds before Paul
Dummett whacked the loose ball away to safety.
Four minutes of added time saw City continue to push on and after forcing a
corner, goalkeeper Smith made his way into the United area. And with almost the
last action of the tie, Marcel Barrington tried to force the ball past Alnwick,
who stuck out an arm to save his side.
