Newcastle reserves won for only the second time at home this season on
Friday lunchtime, overcoming City at a blustery Whitley Park to deservedly claim
the points.
With Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor both included as over-age players, the
black and whites came close to taking a ninth minute lead when striker Adam
Campbell drove against the post from the edge of the area.
The visitors then struck the woodwork at the other end of the field in bizarre
circumstances - an over-hit pass from inside the Norwich half catching in the
swirling wind and bouncing over the head of United 'keeper Jonathan Mitchell,
only to then hit the upright and bounce clear.
Within three minutes City were ahead though, striker Carlton Morris robbing
Curtis Good on the edge of the United box before shooting past Mitchell.
Newcastle hit back five minutes later after a break down the right out of
defence saw Gutierrez release Rolando Aarons. He played in Campbell and when the
ball ended up at the far post, defender Ewan McNeil got the final touch which
'keeper Ben Killip couldn't quite keep out.
Gutierrez was then chopped down on the edge of the Norwich box by Kyle McFadden
after 35 minutes - who was booked. Gael Bigirimana then stepped up to flight a
perfect free-kick past a motionless Killip and into the net.
United ended the half a man short when Kevin Mbabu limped off with an ankle
injury and he made way for substitute Jonathyn Quinn after the break, with Lubo
Satka retreating from a sweeper role to right back.
The Magpies extended their lead in the 64th minute, Gutierrez starting and
finishing the move after a neat one-two with Campbell on the edge of the area.
And with two minutes remaining Killip denied Gutierrez but from the resulting
corner, Quinn forced the ball home from close range to make it 4-1.
Gutierrez hadn't kicked a ball since the win at Cardiff in October, while Taylor
got his first pitch time since the opening Premier League game of the season.
Taylor last appeared for the reserves in a home meeting with Manchester United
at Darsley Park in March 2011, while this was a second string bow for Jonas, who
was watched by a gaggle of family members.
