Newcastle reserves began their Northumberland Senior Cup campaign with victory over the Northern League Second Division leaders on Wednesday night.

Graham Fenton's Robins snatched a seventh minute lead when ex-Magpie Keiran Wrightson lobbed Jonathan Mitchell. United levelled however when Adam Campbell centred from the right for left back Macaulay Gillesphey to calmly tuck the ball away by the back post.

Undaunted, Shields put pressure on the visiting defence and came close to scoring again as their captain Kevin Hughes had a goalbound effort cleared off the line. Local lad Campbell then put Newcastle ahead for the first time in the tie after 17 minutes, taking a pass from Gael Bigirimana before beating 'keeper Johnny Ball.

United made a change before the interval, with striker Tom Heardman replacing midfielder Brandon Miele but it was Campbell who increased the visitor's advantage, calmly lobbing the ball home after 52 minutes.

Callum Roberts then saw a powerful shot smack back off the goalframe just after the hour mark before Campbell broke forward and bore down on goal in search of his hat-trick, only to miscontrol and allow Ball to collect.

Shields came close to reducing the arrears in the closing stages at a chilly Daren Persson Stadium, but United completed a trouble-free passage to the last four of the competition, joining defending champions Ashington, last year's beaten finalists Whitley Bay and Blyth Spartans.

Semi-final draw details and tie dates are awaited.
