Second half strikes from
Adam Campbell and Haris Vuckic ensured that United's second string left Craven
Cottage with a point on Friday night, while fit-again Massadio Haidara made his
first appearance of the season.
United took to the field wearing their yellow third kit and came close to taking
an early lead, when Gael Bigirimana collected the ball in midfield and let
fly from long range. Unlike his stunner in our last away game at the Hawthorns
though, this time the crossbar denied him.
The hosts soon gained the initiative and went ahead midway through the first
half, when prolific striker Moussa Dembele intercepted a pass from Gael
Bigirimana and shot past 'keeper Jak Alnwick.
However the Magpies were level within five minutes of the interval, when a
defensive error was exploited by Adam Campbell, who side-footed home for his
second goal in as many games.
Fulham regained the lead on 72 minutes, when a slick break upfield culminated in
winger Buomesca Tue Na crossing from the right wing for Dembele to flick home
his second of the evening from close range.
Lyle Della Verde then rattled the goal frame from 15 yards in Fulham's next
attack, but United drew level with ten minutes to play, when substitute Callum
Roberts crossed for Haris Vuckic to head past Neil Etheridge.
At the other end, Alnwick pulled off a trio of noteworthy stops in the closing
stages of the game to secure a point and extend Newcastle's unbeaten run to four
matches in the process. Haidara completed an hour on his comeback as scheduled and looked useful, while
United's front trio of Campbell, Armstrong and Vuckic battled tirelessly.
In
the absence of James Tavernier, Curtis Good and Kevin Mbabu, there was a reserve
team debut for 17 year-old Academy full back James Morgan while fellow defender
Lewis Aird also made his bow at this level during the second half, becoming the
33rd player to see action in just eight matches.
