Newcastle U21s came from behind to salvage a point against Bolton at Whitley Park on Monday night against a Trotters side who have now avoided defeat on Tyneside for the past three seasons.

Captained by Gabriel Obertan, the second string were on the back foot from the off and Bolton's Zach Clough shot wide when well-placed after three minutes.

Striker Adam Campbell had United's first effort on goal when he took advantage of a bad pass but shot straight at goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan.

The visitors hit the the post direct from a corner in the 21st minute and home custodian Jak Alnwick had to be alert to palm away another corner a minute later. Wanderers hit the upright again on the half hour when Tom Youngs was played in but smashed the ball against the goalframe and Jan Gregus headed wide moments later.

Alnwick saved well with his feet from Youngs but the sides went in scoreless at half-time; a situation that was altered within two minutes of the restart when visiting striker Youngs hit a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

Obertan and Cian Bolger were both booked for raising their hands in the 56th minute and Conor Wilkinson shot narrowly over from 20 yards before Peter Beardsley's side equalised in the 71st minute, Gabriel Obertan beating the right back before cutting the ball back for Adam Campbell to supply a measured left-footed finish from ten yards.

The same combination should have given United the winner when Campbell robbed Longergan and laid it back to Obertan, but the Frenchman blazed his effort high over the bar with just a defender to beat on the line.
