Goals from Macaulay Gillesphey, Adam Armstrong and Dan Gosling gave the
U21s a winning start to their home campaign at St. James' Park as they defeated
their Black Country counterparts.
United began brightly and Haris Vuckic saw his fourth minute shot from the edge
of the box tipped over by visiting 'keeper John Flatt. Wolves gradually came
back into it and Gael Bigirimana headed one effort off his own line on 16
minutes.
From the next Wolves attack Patrick Antelmi scuffed a header wide when well
placed, but United failed to heed the warning and the visiting striker poked
home the opener from another Wolves corner in the 21st minute.
That seemed to wake United up and with Vuckic and Gosling linking up well, they
created a succession of shooting chances, Gillesphey, Bigirimana, Vuckic and
Curtis Good all trying their luck.
The breakthrough came when a forward ball to Vuckic in the right channel saw him
send over a deep centre that ended up at the feet of an onside Gillesphey at the
far post, who shot home across Flatt and into the Leazes End goal.
Better was to come, as Vuckic then cracked a 35-yard drive off the Wolves
crossbar in the closing moments of first half normal time. And within seconds
United were ahead through a fine goal, right back Kevin Mbabu striding
forward after beating an opponent on the edge of his own box. Adam Armstrong was
powering down the middle and after picking up possession, poked his low shot beyond the 'keeper to make it
two goals in his first two starts this season.
A quieter second half saw Newcastle lose their way after Vuckic was withdrawn -
presumably doing enough to catch the eye of the watching John Carver and make
into the squad for Monday's game at Manchester City.
United 'keeper Jak Alnwick twice came off his line to deny lively Wolves sub,
David Moli, before the result was finally put beyond doubt with a third goal in
the last seconds of normal time.
Gosling wrapped things up by almost apologetically knocking a loose ball
home from close range after his forward burst set up Jonathyn Quinn, who laid
the ball off rather than shoot, and then Tom Heardman, whose miskick fell nicely
for Gosling.
