Having completed their journey across the North Sea by DFDS to Ijmuiden, United's Reserve side began their three -game Dutch tour against HVV Hollandia in Hoorn, to the north of Amsterdam.

Joey Barton gave Newcastle the lead in the 16th minute at the 2,500 capacity Juliana Sport Park only for Brian Paul Tesselaar to level ten minutes later and Kalvin Robert put the amateurs ahead nine minutes before half-time.

Barton missed another chance on 55 minutes when he was fouled in the box by Cees Duijn but after sending the 'keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot, his effort hit the right upright.

However, Ryan Donaldson, did level things up for Peter Beardsley's side ten minutes from the end after latching on to Joan Edmundsson's pass and the game ended all square.

Forgotten men Samuel Adjei and Fabio Zamblera were unused substitutes, neither the Swedish winger or the Italian striker playing a solitary game for the reserves last season due to injury.
