A Magpies reserve side showing seven changes from the starting XI who beat Wigan 5-1 on Tyneside last week proved unable to contain a lively City side at Hyde's Ewen Fields on Wednesday night.

With a much-changed squad weakened by injury, first team training commitments, loan moves and Thursday night's FA Youth Cup tie, three teenagers were blooded before even starting a game for our U18 side.

And although 15 year-old goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell picked the ball out of his net five times, the schoolboy custodian made a handful of noteworthy stops over the course of the evening.

Fellow debutant Republic of Ireland youth international midfielder Brandon Miele started, while forward Adam Campbell was introduced from the bench.

And of those more experienced reserve campaigners, Conor Newton was deployed as a makeshift centre half and Michael Richardson was pushed up from his usual midfield berth into a striking role.

City's Swedish striker John Guidetti proved to be United's chief tormentor, opening the scoring on 13 minutes. And although a Sammy Ameobi spot kick levelled the scores eight minutes before the interval when Richardson was fouled, the second half saw the home side pull away.

Guidetti put City ahead again seven minutes after the restart and when Mitchell could only parry his 63rd minute effort, Joan Roman was on hand to make it 3-1.

That became 4-1 when Guidetti completed his hat trick 16 minutes from time, netting a penalty. And Chris Chantler then got in on the goalscoring act after 84 minutes to record a third successive 5-1 scoreline in Magpies reserve games - Manchester United having beaten us by that margin at Altrincham before Christmas.

A trio of other reserve rookies were unused subs for Peter Beardsley's side meanwhile: Andy Mogwo, Michael Hoganson and Lee Toland.
