A day shy of his 50th birthday, reserve coach Peter Beardsley commented:

"Obviously it's nice to win but the most important thing is how you play, and I thought we played some terrific stuff. There were a lot of plusses.

About hat trick scorer Nile Ranger:

"When you look at when we beat West Ham, he missed from six yards out. He missed by miles. That's him, but he's still a kid. When you look at some of the younger players, he's physically bigger and stronger, but in terms of age, he's a kid.

"He's got a lot to learn, but to be fair to him, when he's trained or played for me, his attitude has been spot-on. He might mis-control the ball sometimes, but that's what happens at the top level. His attitude's good, and he's got a real chance.

"
(For his second goal) He had a lot of work to do with the power and the pace, and then the finish after it was a great finish. Credit to him – he scored a hat-trick. Our punters will be delighted to hear that because they love him. He excites them."

Peter Beardsley's second string restarted their league season after a month's break with another game behind closed doors at Darsley Park on Monday afternoon - their fourth in succession.

And Newcastle fans were denied the chance to see striker Nile Ranger grab his first hat trick at reserve team level, while full back duo James Perch and Paul Dummett also netted in our most emphatic victory of the campaign.

On the receiving end were a Wigan side who beat United 2-1 earlier in the season and came into this game as reserve group leaders, level on points with the Magpies but with a game in hand and superior goal difference.

The home side were
soon
ahead when James Perch back-headed Dan Gosling's cross in from close range. Nile Ranger then doubled the lead when he volleyed in a loose ball after a corner wasn't cleared and some head tennis ensued. And Ranger made it 3-0 just before the interval when he darted in from the left, evading three challenges and finishing well with a low curling effort.

Into the second half and the move of the match saw Patrick McLaughlin set fellow Northern Ireland youngster Shane Ferguson away down the left and he centred well for Xisco to force a save from the visiting goalkeeper.
Nile Ranger then came close to completing his hat trick midway through the second half, only for Redmond to block his goal-bound header on the line.

The Latics managed to pull one back when a clearance deflected past Ole Soderberg after striking forward Callum McManaman.
However, Ranger wasn't to be denied and notched his treble
soon after, stooping to head home a Ferguson centre from the left flank.

Paul Dummett then made it 5-1
, stealing into the box and ramming home substitute Sammy Ameobi's right wing cross. And the Magpies left back got forward again to drive a shot in that glanced off the crossbar, before the referee blew to end proceedings.

24 hours after making his competitive bow, midfielder Dan Gosling successfully completed the full 90 minutes
in central midfield - looking to have coped with some keen tackling from the Latics.
