Newcastle's second string recorded their
biggest success of the season on Tuesday night - after they fell behind to an
early goal at Whitley Park.
A youthful Town side were ahead within two minutes of the first whistle, when
midfielder Jack Hunt caught the home side napping and shot home - the fifth
successive game in which our reserves have conceded first.
That spurred the home side on to greater efforts however, and with Patrick
McLaughlin showing up well in midfield they were soon level, as the Northern
Ireland U21 set Haris Vuckic away to beat 'keeper Simon Eastwood.
Faroe Islander Joan Edmundsson then tried his luck with a solo dribble and
dipping effort, before United took the lead just after the half hour. Shane
Ferguson's corner wasn't dealt with and dropped nicely for Paul Dummett to bury
into the roof of the net at the far post.
Vuckic then came close again before half time as United sought to press home
their advantage and the Slovenian then somehow shot wide in the opening seconds
of the second half, after great work from Shane Ferguson.
A third Newcastle goal wasn't long in coming though, with top scorer Wesley Ngo
Baheng shooting across the 'keeper on 53 minutes - Vuckic helping the ball over
at the far post, but appearing to credit Baheng with the goal.
Having taken four years to get off the mark at this level, Callum Morris then
made it two goals in as many games on 68 minutes, as another Ferguson corner was
fumbled by Eastwood and laid on a plate for the Toon defender.
And four became five with nine minutes of the game remaining, as substitute Phil
Airey advanced and shot home from outside the box via a post.
