We Said

Coach Alan Thompson commented:

"The lads are disappointed that we haven’t came off with a point. In the whole scheme of things the second-half display compared to the first half says to me we deserved to win it. On the basis of chances created we deserved it.

“But when you make subs you change how you are set up on set-plays, and some of the information I gave to one of the subs who came on didn’t quite get across. That’s what can happen when you make changes.

“It was quite hard from where I was (to see if Newcastle should have had a penalty), but I can only go off what the lads say. The last penalty appeal from Paddy McLaughlin he says he was almost certain he was pushed in the back. I can only take his word for it but the ref hasn’t given it.

“It was a great header from Callum and he was probably the pick of the back four. Wes took his goal well and it was a lovely little run."

Wednesday night saw Newcastle's reserve side halt a run of four successive defeats, but they were ultimately forced to settle for a point at Whitley Park.

A bright opening from Alan Thompson's side saw striker Wesley Ngo Baheng strike the woodwork, but it was the vistors who broke the deadlock on 20 minutes. Tim Krul had already been called into action to deny Scunthorpe but could do nothing to prevent Michael O'Connor netting after breaking through the home ranks.

And the Magpies 'keeper was quickly forced to make a further block to deny Matt Godden as the Iron looked to build on their early advantage.

Without a goal in over five hours of league action, Newcastle looked short of confidence and inspiration, but managed to claw their way back into the game thanks to a set piece play seven minutes before the interval. Defender Callum Morris was well-placed to get on the end of a Frank Danquah corner and head past visiting 'keeper Sam Slocombe for his first-ever goal at this level.

Newcastle resumed after the break with substitute Max Johnson between the sticks in in what was a mostly shapeless and uninspiring second half. Both sides created half-chances, with Jonny Godsmark and Baheng seeing efforts blocked, while Johnson bravely came off his line to deny Scunthorpe's Adam Boyes.

And with just six minutes to play, Baheng jinked his way into a shooting position and blasted his sixth goal of the season into the roof of the net. The Iron hit back though and youth team defender Ashley Palmer took advantage of some slack marking from a corner to force home an 89th minute leveller.
