We Said

Coach Alan Thompson commented:

"I just said to them that I know it is a difficult pitch, but half of this game is about desire and running around. If you do that you have a much better chance of winning football matches.

“We threw a couple of lads on at the end in Aaron Spear and Michael McCrudden and they gave us everything. They haven’t got much physical presence - but a bit of heart can make a lot of difference.

“Max did great and, to be fair to him, he hasn’t played a lot of football in the last year or two because of the standard of players we’ve got at the football club. We’re delighted for him and I told him he had done well.”

It's now four successive defeats for Newcastle's reserve side and no goal in three outings, after their Boro rivals completed a double against them in a rearranged game at a sunny Whitley Park on Monday afternoon.

After three seasons of occasional bench duty, Magpies goalkeeper Max Johnson was handed his debut at this level by reserve coach Alan Thompson.

However after making a good stop in the first half, Johnson was unable to prevent Jonathan Grounds from netting with a close range header from a corner on 69 minutes - the full back also having scored the winner when the sides met at the Riverside last October.

Despite some late pressure from United though, no equaliser came and the result was enough to return the visitors back to the top of the table.
