A youthful Newcastle reserve side exited from the Northumberland Senior Cup at the semi-final stage on Tuesday night, losing to Northern League opposition.

The Seahorses had been the last team to beat United in this competition - back in January 2007 - and in the last Senior Cup meeting of the sides in March 2008, took the Magpies to extra time before bowing out.

Whitley were ahead within five minutes thanks to a pile-driver from midfielder Paul Robinson (once a team mate of Ryan Taylor at Tranmere Rovers), who smashed the ball past Ole Soderberg from the edge of the box.

Back came United though, with striker Wesley Baheng marking his return from injury by finding the net soon after. That maintained his scoring run against Whitley, having netted his first -ever Toon goal in the 2008 Cup meeting and also got one in our 3-1 friendly win on this ground last July.

Whitley carved out the majority of chances in the rest of the first half, although Baheng shot wide when through on goal, as 'keeper Tom Kindley narrowed the angle.

However the home side went into half time deservedly ahead, after Newcastle were unable to clear another dangerous ball into their box and striker Paul Chow headed the ball goalbound.

United introduced Phil Airey after the break, but the in-form striker lacked both service and support and Bay remained in the ascendancy.  A third goal for the home side failed to produce any meaningful response from Newcastle, who had been troubled all evening by the right wing trickery of another Toon old boy, Chris Moore - who was making his final appearance before joining Darlo.

Northern Ireland youngster Shane Ferguson did see one effort saved but United's one -touch football began to break down and their efforts at route one failed to trouble the Bay defence.

Whitley now await the outcome of the other semi-final later this month between Ashington and Blyth Spartans, presumably for an SJP final.
