We Said

Coach Alan Thompson commented:

"Obviously we're disappointed because it was a cracking game, but the referee took the decision to abandon the game and we have to respect that.

"On the plus side, we've had a good work out for the best part of an hour and it's another game we'll have to look forward to. We played some good stuff at times and Kazenga took his goal very well.

"I was happy with how we did considering the two-month layoff we've had. We passed it well and created enough chances to have been ahead at half-time. It's been a test for the lads these past couple of months without any games, but they've trained extremely hard and their attitude has been fantastic."

A freezing pitch at Glanford Park on Tuesday night caused the abandonment of Newcastle's reserve game against Scunthorpe United ten minutes into the second half, with the score level.

The Iron missed an early penalty (conceded by defender Darren Lough) before Kazenga LuaLua shot home to put the Magpies ahead midway through the first period.

Scunny hit back and levelled before the break, but with temperatures plummeting in the second half and the playing surface becoming dangerous in the opinion of match referee Rob Madley, the game was abandoned.

Newcastle had a let off after 12 minutes when visiting defender Dan Leadbitter was adjudged to have illegally stopped Matthew Sparrow in the box. From the resultant spot kick however, Ben May miscued his effort which was well wide of Ole Soderberg in the Magpies goal.

Newcastle's Swedish stopper was then called into action on a couple of occasions as he returned to the side after an absence through injury.

However it was the visitors who went ahead on 25 minutes, after an interception from Darren Lough sent Kazenga LuaLua racing in on goal. He then beat home 'keeper Josh Lillis and shot into an empty net. Soderberg was beaten in the final seconds of the first half, when Matthew Sparrow curled a right-footed shot home.

PS: It was subsequently announced that the scoreline when the match was called off will count as the final result and the game won't be replayed.
