Newcastle's
first-ever visit to the Don Valley Stadium saw them sent packing by a more
experienced Rotherham reserve side.
A Toon XI lacking first teamers, without a clutch of youth internationals and
shorn of other regulars through injury, took an early lead when Aaron Spear
scored his first goal for the club on 12 minutes.
The 16 year-old midfielder shot home from a tight angle via home 'keeper Jamie
Annerson, after Toon duo Sammy Ameobi and Samuel Adjei had broken upfield and
the latter centred for Wesley Ngo Baheng to make contact in front of goal,
diverting the ball to Spear.
However, that proved to be something of a false dawn, with the Millers having
seen an effort cleared off the visitors' goal-line by Patrick Nzuzi three
minutes earlier.
And after finding space down the flanks on a number of earlier occasions,
Rotherham levelled on 27 minutes, when Stephen Brogan centred from the left and
Ryan Taylor (not that one) headed past Jak Alnwick in the United goal.
Taylor tried his luck twice more before the break as Rotherham finished the
stronger and it was no shock when they took the lead ten minutes after the
restart. Brogan again was the architect, evading a couple of half-hearted
tackles before squaring the ball for Micky Cummins, who gave Alnwick no chance
from close range.
That failed to trigger any semblance of a fightback from a tiring Toon and
within eight minutes the Millers were able to extend their advantage, Alnwick
left exposed again by his defence as Paul Warne shot home easily.
The goal of the night came on 77 minutes, as Brogan capped a good display by
converting with a dipping shot from the edge of the Newcastle area. Baheng was
belatedly able to pull one back for Alan Thompson's side with a header into an
open goal after a goalkeeping rick from Annerson - his fifth goal in as many
reserve league games this season.
Other than that though, there were few positives to take from the game, as ten
of the twelve players who appeared for our U18 side on Saturday were involved
again.
There were debuts at this level for Patrick Nzuzi and substitute Ryan McCorrigan,
plus a first start for Spear. Tamas Kadar missed out due to illness.
