Half time: United 0 City 0
59mins Baheng shot at the Gallowgate End 2-1
Full time: United 1 City 0
A 59th
minute effort from Wesley Ngo Baheng got United's totesport.com reserve league
campaign off to a winning start at SJP on Tuesday evening.
The French forward converted from seven yards out after good work from James
Tavernier - although match referee Harrington deserves some credit for playing
an advantage after a United player was fouled earlier in the move.
In a low-key affair, City shaded the opening exchanges and Newcastle 'keeper Ole
Soderberg was called into action on 22 minutes to deny Leon Osborne.
That seemed to rouse the home side and Baheng should have done better just
before the half hour, when he got on the end of deep left wing cross from
Kazenga LuaLua, but could only direct a weak header at the City 'keeper.
LuaLua himself then shot narrowly over from distance, but it took until the 57th
minute for United to threaten the City goal again, when Frank Wiafe Danquah saw
his effort palmed away at the expense of a corner.
Within two minutes the Magpies were ahead, 19 year-old Baheng extending his
pre-season scoring run by shooting home at the Gallowgate End - his first-ever
goal at SJP.
City, who included trialist Tomi Ameobi (brother of Shola and tonight's United
sub Sammy) pushed forward in the closing stages in search for an equaliser,
Soderberg touching a 75th minute Rory Boulding shot over the bar.
