TN's head of Football Paul Johnson said
afterwards:
"I think I counted eight chances for us
the entire game but we didn’t take advantage of any - they had five chances
and put away five goals."“Fitness was a key issue for us tonight. If the
lads could maybe get in the gym more things might have been different. I think
we played well, all the same."
United moved one step closer to retaining their
hold on the Northumberland Senior Cup on Monday, overcoming their Northern
League Division Two opponents at a slightly soggy Whitley Park.
With Richard Money back in charge of the side, there was a debut for Swedish
youngster Samuel Adjei, partnered in attack by fellow recent arrival Haris
Vuckic.
Having grabbed a hat trick on the same ground a week ago, Newcastle midfielder
Mark Doninger opened the scoring with a low 20 yard shot after 16 minutes.
And that lead was doubled within two minutes, as Haris Vuckic marked his first
home appearance with a third goal in just four games, finishing with ease after
Jonny Godsmark raced down the right and pulled the ball back.
The score remained that way until sixteen minutes from full time, when
substitute Wesley Ngo Baheng turned and shot home on what was his first outing
since sustaining a serious leg injury in the Senior Cup back in April 2008.
James Tavernier then cracked home the goal of the night on 79 minutes - having
earlier come close with a range finder - before Baheng clipped a post with his
effort.
And with Team Northumbria (who are actually a mixture of students and local
league players) tiring, Newcastle rounded things off courtesy of Jonny
Godsmark's drive on 89 minutes.
