We Said

With Dickie Dosh away scouting in Spain, Colin Caldwerood took charge and commented:

“It was very important to win, and the next two games will be important for us.

"We had one or two senior boys playing and coming back from injury. Everybody got something out of it. What was pleasing was the attitude and the application. The senior lads led by example, and Xisco and Alan Smith did well.”

Xisco added:

“You’re always happy when you play, and if you score it’s even better, but playing is the most important thing. It was a very good ball from Ryan Donaldson for the first goal, and for the second goal, I was alone in the box. To score two goals was good.

“I feel pain in my toe and it was inflamed. I will have to wait and see how bad it is.

“But I came to Newcastle to play in the first-team and I will play in the reserves to build fitness. It’s OK.”

Waffle

A strong Toon Reserve side broke their home duck in resounding fashion on Monday evening, notching up a first victory in three attempts at SJP this season.

Although the Latics fielded nine of the starting eleven who had beaten United 3-0 earlier in the season, they came up against a far stronger Magpies side for whom Cacapa, Xisco and Smith got some much-needed match practice.

Wigan were forced to field teenager Callum Williams in goal and he kept out efforts from Kazenga LuaLua, David Edgar, Xisco and Mark Doninger in the opening half hour.

The inevitable opener arrived on 31 minutes, when Doninger's deep corner was headed back by Edgar. The ball dropped to Xisco who took a couple of touches but failed to get a shot in, but fell nicely for Cacapa to fire low into the Leazes net from six yards.

Defender Darren Lough limped off five minutes later after a rough tackle to be replaced at left back by Shane Ferguson and although the visitors failed to mount any serious attacks, half-time arrived with them just one down.

If Newcastle had been on top in the opening half, they totally dominated the second 45 minutes, with LuaLua in particular tormenting the Latics with pace and control.

Ryan Donaldson and Xisco combined for full back James Tavernier to blast his hurried shot over on 47 minutes, before brilliant combination play from Frank Danquah and LuaLua saw the latter weave into the box but place his shot agonisingly wide - had it gone in, then it would have been a worthy contender for goal of the season.

LuaLua atoned for that miss just six minutes later, driving home from the edge of the box on the hour with a shot of similar range, velocity and height to the pair he grabbed in the FA Youth Cup at Manchester City last week.

And with the visitors in disarray, Xisco capped a display that will have done wonders for his confidence by taking a Tavernier pass and slipping a shot under the keeper with 13 minutes remaining.

The Spaniard then saw a close-range effort tipped over the bar, but got his second five minutes later as he converted a right wing centre from sub Jonny Godsmark.

Xisco then came close to repeating the trick almost from the restart in a rerun of the move. This time however the dangerous low ball evaded him but was converted from point-blank range at the far post by Nile Ranger, with almost his first touch since arriving from the bench.

United finished the game with ten men after Xisco picked up a knock and went off, with all three subs already used.

Cacapa and Alan Smith both completed the full game however and eased themselves back in against a Wigan side who failed to test the former in central defence or the latter in a deep midfield role.

Newcastle 'keeper Fraser Forster's main involvement meanwhile consisted of picking up a booking for throwing the ball away in protest at having given away a corner.
