Having lost their three games in the North West this season - against Bolton, Wigan and Everton - United's reserves maintained their dismal M62 record on Tuesday.

Playing at the Ewen Fields ground of Hyde United, City's second string dominated proceedings from the off and missed numerous chances before Paul Marshall shot past Tim Krul from distance on 24 minutes.

United's best chance fell to Jonny Godsmark after 38 minutes, but the in-form winger couldn't extend his scoring run to a fifth successive game, as his effort was blocked.

And the Magpies were swiftly made to pay within two minutes as City extended their lead thanks to a header from Ian Daly from Marshall's free kick.

Vladimir Weiss then sealed United's fate with nine minutes to play, blasting home a third after breaking into the box.

The only bright spot for United was a first appearance of the season for Alan Smith, who played for just over an hour as arranged - apparently without mishap.

Richard Money's side still face three more trips to this part of the world before the season's end - with fixtures to play against Liverpool, Blackburn and Manchester United.
