Cumbrian coach Eric Kinder said:
"It has to be said, but that was a very strange game.
"At half time it was compliments all round for everybody. I thought we were good value for the 1-0 lead at the break.
I thought the front two, Gary Madine and Scott Dobie, caused them more problems than their two highly rated strikers caused us. I thought Gary held it up for us, Scott was intelligent with his running in behind, and I thought the whole side deserved a massive pat on the back.
"I knew they would get a bit of a rocket at half time because Richard Money, who runs their team, was going mental on the side of the pitch. I told the lads to be wary of that.
So, we went in to the break feeling comfortable then, in the second half, it changed completely.
"Everything that we did well in the first half was suddenly extremely poor in the second. We ended up on the wrong end of a right thrashing - and that is completely the right word to use.
We never got close enough to anybody, we stood off ... and when you stand off good players like that then they will punish you.
We lost possession of the ball and that cost us. We had 100% possession of the ball for 4 of the 6 goals, and we just gave up and lost it easily. They broke on us and we weren't strong enough to deal with it.
"If you aren't going to press people in and around the penalty box then you're going to get punished. If we had the facility to look at the six goals it would be embarrassing. It's probably the worst half of football that I've been involved with since I came here. The only slight consolation was that we didn't stop, we kept going and we kept playing, but unfortunately our off the ball work was nowhere near good
enough.
"If you look at it in the second half, we had three of the back four who were Youth team players, and they were against people like Ameobi and Carroll, who are strong and direct. Unfortunately we couldn't cope with it in the second half, which was disappointing. It now has to be a learning curve for everybody.
Interim Coach Richard Money commented:
“To be honest, I thought we were
shocking in the first half.
“We didn’t play
with any urgency or tempo, and that’s not been us, certainly since
I’ve been at the club. We had quite a bit to say to them at half-time,
as you can imagine, and they responded well and played proper football in
the second half.
“We got the rewards
with some very good goals.
“I thought Sammy was
excellent. We’re trying to nurture him and give him the right amount of
time, but it looks like he’s got a very good future. I thought Ferguson
was excellent as well.
“We scored six, but
we probably could have had 10. In the first half we weren’t stringing
any passes together, and it was coming deeper and deeper. We just said to
them at half-time ‘play higher up the pitch, and get some good
deliveries’.
“Andy Carroll was a
handful, and again, he could be anything."
Responding to ongoing stories linking him with the vacant Swindon
Town manager's job:
“Rumours are rumours
until they become fact, and that’s all they are at the minute.
“It’s flattering
to be linked with other jobs, but I’m very happy here. I’m enjoying
the role, and we’ll see what happens.”
Newcastle's second string maintained
their interest in the Central League Cup competition on Wednesday
afternoon with a resounding victory at Brunton Park.
However they were forced to come back from a half time deficit, having
allowed defender Tom Aldred to head the Cumbrians in front on 17 minutes.
That was a fair reflection on the play, with striker Scott Dobie having
wasted a good chance earlier, directing his header downwards and seeing it
bounce over the bar.
Newcastle struggled to fashion anything at the other end, with Fabio
Zamblera unimpressive and Frank Danquah having the quietest of games after
returning from a three month absence due to injury.
Both failed to reappear after the interval and the Magpies simply never
looked back, Sam Ameobi taking just seven minutes to find space in the
area and drive the ball home.
From then on Carlisle were never in it, as Newcastle looked like scoring
every time they went forward and Carlisle's defence fell apart.
Identical 20 yard drives from Andy Carroll flew into the net on 56 &
58 minutes, before Kazenga LuaLua's deflected shot wrong-footed the home
'keeper to make it 4-1 on 72 minutes.
Still the goals came and Carroll turned on the edge of the Carlisle area
to complete his hat trick with a venomous strike on 74 minutes, before
Jonny Godsmark struck with a low effort, to make it 6-1 with 13 minutes
remaining.
