Richard Money said:
"The one thing we have at the moment is a real threat going forward.
“I thought Andy
Carroll played particularly well. He could have had four or five on the
night. Nile Ranger has played well for three or four games, but maybe had a
little dip last night. That will do him good, and I am sure he will bounce
back from that.
“We had a fair bit of
pace and energy in the right areas and we always looked a threat.
“I thought it was a
very competitive reserve game, as Hull played very well in the first half.
They moved the ball about with good tempo and good effect.
“However, I was
pleased with our second-half performance. It was a good reaction to what was
said at half-time.
“On chances, we were
probably a bit unlucky not to have won it, but we know we could also have
lost it.”
Richard
Money's side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to four games at
SJP on Tuesday evening, but only had themselves to blame for failing to collect
all three points.
United had gone behind to a lively Tigers
side who had wasted numerous chances before former Bolton player Stelios tapped
in from close range on 32 minutes.
But after hauling themselves back level thanks to Andy Carroll's firm
header from a Bassong cross on 48 minutes, they then proceeded to waste
opportunities of their own.
Prime offender was Carroll himself, who had headed at the 'keeper and seen a
volleyed effort saved in the first half.
However his most glaring miss came after he won a dubious penalty on 54 minutes
(which stemmed from a fortunate corner award) and over-ruled spot kick regular
Mark Doninger to take the kick himself.
Unfortunately his effort was too close to 'keeper Matt Duke, who was able to
block and the danger passed.
Further chances for the Magpies came in the closing stages of the game, with
Carroll shooting wide and his strike partner Nile Ranger fatally hesitating when
he had a clear sight of goal.
Jonny Godsmark also saw a goalbound effort blocked, while Ranger again came
close to getting back among the goals with a close-range header that lacked
power.
In an increasingly frantic finale though, the Tigers could have claimed a
first-ever success at this level (and a second win at SJP this season) only for
Nicky Featherstone to miscue with the goal at his mercy.
