Despite taking an early lead, a
first-choice Newcastle Reserve side were humbled by their Northern League
opponents at the Sam Smiths Ground on Tuesday evening.
England youth international striker Ryan Donaldson opened the scoring on two
minutes, but Benfield were quickly level after United 'keeper Fraser Forster's
fumble let in Scott Emmerson.
The home side then took the lead through Lee Hamilton, although Jonny Godsmark
shot home to restore parity almost from the restart.
Emmerson again gave Benfield the lead with another punted effort that caught
Forster off his line, before former Brian Dodsworth converted a fourth before
the half hour.
Former West Ham trainee Phil Lumsden then completed the first half misery with a
deflected effort to leave Adam Sadler's side 5-2 down at the interval.
Swedish stopper Ole Soderberg went between the posts for the second half and
picked the ball out of the net on 71 minutes Hamilton rounded off the rout.
Any hopes that the non-league side would run out of steam failed to materialise,
with Benfield having a late effort rightfully ruled out for offside and seldom
being put under any pressure in defence.
Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott, Chris Hughton, Arthur Cox, recruitment co-ordinator
Jeff Vetere and new youth Supremo Richard Money were all present - along with
Reserve team boss Adam Sadler and Robbie Elliott.
The latter was later confirmed as having returned to the club for a third time -
taking up a role as strength and conditioning coach, after two previous playing
stints.
They had very little positive to take from this early runout, with no less than
five of United's starting XI currently on professional contracts at the club,
but nobody in a black & white shirt looking superior to their part-time
opponents.
