An own goal and two efforts from Andy
Carroll saw off the Toffees at SJP on Monday evening, as we ended a
three-match winless run in some style.
Adam Sadler's side came closest to breaking the first half deadlock on 23
minutes when Mark Doninger's volleyed effort was touched over the crossbar by
Iain Turner in the Everton goal.
And at the other end Fraser Forster continued his good form of late with
confident stops from visiting forward duo Keiron Agard and Aiden Downes.
The second half began with Jonny Godsmark breaking through on Turner but seeing
his shot blocked - Doninger suffering the same fate within two minutes.
United introduced recent signing Fabio Zamblera on the hour in place of the
unimpressive Baheng, but it was fellow new recruit Ben Tozer who was to play a
crucial part in our opener on 67 minutes.
James Troisi's centre from the right was headed goalwards by the former Swindon
defender and although Hunt got a hand to the ball, he was only able to parry it
into the net via his team mate John Irving.
The collective celebrations that followed from the home players said much about
the Toon team spirit at this level, and there was more to come from the
resurgent reserves.
Enter Andy Carroll, been restored to the side after missing the last two reserve
outings due to first team callups.
His eagerness saw him outpace Turner in the Everton box on 76 minutes and lob
the 'keeper from a narrow angle - only for Irving to atone for his earlier
misfortune by clearing the effort off the line.
There was no stopping Carroll five minutes from the end though, as he latched on
to Godsmark's right wing cross to fire powerfully into the roof of the
Gallowgate net.
And after his strike partner Zamblera came close to a debut goal with low shot
that was blocked, Carroll wrapped things up nicely 90 seconds from the end as he
headed home Doninger's corner - a linesman's flag confirming the effort had
crossed the line.
The reserves now face a series of trips to the North West, with away games at
Morecambe (v Blackburn), Leyland (v Bolton) and Northwich (v Man United) to come
over the next three weeks.
And then our league season comes to a close when the Red Devils visit SJP on Mon
March 31st.
