Two quality shots from midfielder Mark
Doninger were the highlight of this expected Senior Cup
success at Ralph Gardner Park on Wednesday evening.
In front of a watching Kevin Keegan, United were ahead at the interval thanks
to a 35th minute effort from winger Jonny Godsmark, a low shot from a
Carroll centre.
Doninger then supplied accurate finishes on 55 and 63 minutes, the second a memorable volley from distance that crashed into the top corner of
the net.
The home side seldom threatened Forster's goal, although they looked to have a
good penalty shout for handball ignored when the scores were level.
And Forster atoned for a poor clearance on 71 minutes when he made ground back
to his goal in the nick of time to tip over a goalbound shot.
Having been prevented through illness from appearing for the reserves last
week, defender Ben Tozer made his debut at this level, playing in central
defence.
And there was another outing for recent acquisition Tamas Kadar, who was
deployed at left back this evening.
The draw is now awaited, with the Magpies joining previous Second Round
victors Whitley Bay and the current cup holders Morpeth
Town.
Wednesday also saw the other outstanding tie completed, with Blyth
Spartans 4-1 winners at Bedlington Terriers.
