We Said

Terry McDermott commented:

“It was very disappointing because it would have been a great start for us - Everton scored right on the 90th minute.

“To be honest they had a bit more experienced team out than we did, but we are still disappointed not to come away with the win.

“Before the game we would have been happy not to lose.

“We asked the players to give 110% beforehand and we got that.

“It was nice for Shola. He did well and you could tell by his performance he had that little bit of extra quality.

“I could not fault his attitude, application and desire.

“All credit to him, he is trying to get fit for first-team selection.

“His display last night moved him nearer to that.”

Assisted by goalkeeping coach Adam Sadler, Terry McDermott took charge of our reserve side on Tuesday when they met their Everton counterparts at the Halton Stadium of the Widnes Vikings Rugby League side.

And after a scoreless first half, Newcastle took the lead just after the hour mark when Shola Ameobi netted from the penalty spot.

The Toffees claimed their own spot kick in the opening seconds of the game when van der Meyde's cross struck Alex Patterson - but referee Metcalfe was unmoved.

At the other end Shola headed wide when well placed, but Everton missed a good chance to go ahead on 21 minutes when Lukas Jutkiewicz
drove the ball into the side netting when confronted with Fraser Forster between the posts.

And Forster was called into action again after the restart, when he denied Brazilian Anderson de Silva and Vidarsson as Everton threatened to gain the upper hand.

Boyle's 64th minute foul on James Troisi though was rightly penalised and Ameobi beat Ruddy from the spot.

Back came the Toffees and Downes almost provided an instant leveller, only to see his volley strike the Magpies crossbar and bounce to safety.

However just when we looked like registering our first away league success of the season, the home side levelled in added time through teenage striker Jutkiewicz - Southampton born despite the name, but of Polish descent.
