We Said

Lee Clark commented:

“I was delighted with the performance from my lads,

"We had a very young side out there and they have shown a great deal of effort and commitment and I couldn't have asked anymore.

"I know I say that results aren't the most important thing, but a local derby is different and none of us wanted to lose this one.

"We scored two brilliant goals and could have even won it at the end."

Two top-drawer strikes from Newcastle youngsters earned Lee Clark's side a point as he returned to his former home at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening.

Clad in their away kit, United took a 12th minute lead thanks to an eye-catching effort from Jonny Godsmark - a week before his 18th birthday.

The home side tried to hit back and once they found their range tested Fraser Forster in the visitors goal.

However he was powerless to stop Gavin Donoghue levelling on 32 minutes, the Republic of Ireland youth international powering home his header after beating his marker at a corner.

More poor defending allowed Jamie Chandler to fire home from close range on 47 minutes, seizing on a loose ball after Forster had blocked a centre from the right.

For a while the mackems looked to force home their advantage as we struggled to get a handle on the midfield.

However Newcastle found their way upfield to register another fine goal midway through the half, midfielder Mark Doninger blasting home an unstoppable right-footed low volley from the edge of the box.

That gave both the team and the travelling fans behind the goal renewed impetus - striker Frank Danquah not far away with one headed attempt in his first competitive start at this level.

The home side spent the closing moments in possession but were unable to get a shot on goal, with a draw probably a fair result after a decent start and end to the contest - but a fairly dodgy middle period.
