Newcastle Academy Director Joe Joyce returned to his birthplace of Consett on
Saturday with a young Magpies XI - but saw the Northern Leaguers teach his lads
a lesson.
The Steelmen looked livelier from the off and the home 'keeper hadn't been
tested when Gary Ormston shot his side ahead from distance on 18 minutes.
Former Toon youngster Craig Robson then netted against his old side with a fine
volley just before the half hour, before ex-Blyth man Mattie Moffatt came to the
fore to put Consett out of sight.
First Moffatt teed up his strike partner Steve Johnson for an easy finish on 34
minutes, before netting a fourth goal himself three minutes before the interval.
Newcastle made no less than eight changes at half time and substitutes Kazenga
LuaLua and Shane Ferguson exchanged passes well for the former to reduce the
arrears on 52 minutes.
However there were few signs of a further fightback save for Lua's dribble and
wild miss on 65 minutes and Phil Airey's effort deflected on to the Consett
crossbar in the final stages.
By then though the home side had registered a fifth goal, Ian Robson beating
Cook from the penalty spot after a United defender handled on the goal line.
