Lee Clark commented: "As I said yesterday, at this level the results are not the most important thing. "But one thing that is important is the performance, and we had a good one last night against City. "The way we passed the ball was fantastic and to come from behind shows we also have character. "And I am delighted that we have wiped out memories of Whitley Bay, which now seems a long time ago. "We probably deserved to win and score more goals, and I would say this was perhaps our best performance of the season. "We have a young group of players here, and it is great they have had a taste of being in or around the first team in the last few months. "It will help them an awful lot in their careers. "Everyone came through last night with no injuries and there is a possibility some may be in the European squad for tomorrow night."
Newcastle's second string came from behind - twice - to earn a point against Manchester City's Reserves at SportCity on Tuesday evening. Lee Clark's young side fought back from an early home goal to level before falling behind again before the break. However, 17-year old Mark Doninger equalised 12 minutes from time with his first goal at this level to make it just one defeat in eight reserve league fixtures for United this season. Winger Karl Moore put City in front after just seven minutes, converting a Ched Evans cross. But Newcastle levelled in the 23rd minute when birthday boy Alan O'Brien centred for Andy Carroll to score from close in. Evans restored the home side's lead when his shot deflected off David Edgar to wrong-foot United 'keeper Fraser Forster. Both sides had chances after the break but it
was Gosforth-born Doninger who cut inside and beat two defenders before firing a
low shot past Laurence Matthewson in the City goal. |
