We Said

Tommy Craig told the official website:

"It was a tough night, but we had a steely resolve about us.

"We've got an unbeaten home record this season and that has started to register with the boys. Before we went out I reminded them that they had an unbeaten record to maintain.

"And the lads now seem hellbent on maintaining it. They have had some great home wins this season, against the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, and they want to keep that record intact.

"After going 2-0 down we needed a quick reply and we got that with Matty's goal. We changed things around a bit after the break to try and get more bodies forward and I've got honest lads who give me a lot of endeavour.

"We kept going and got an equaliser through Carl and I feel we thoroughly deserved it."

They Said

Coach Andy Holden commented:

"He (Anichebe) took his goals very well, I was pleased with both of them.

"More so the first one because that’s what we’ve been working on in training - turning defenders and getting shots in. He’s only 17-years old and he’s scored two goals for us on the night, which is great."

"I said afterwards that we didn’t deserve to be pulled back but I always felt that we needed a third goal just to kill the game off," he said.

"We conceded the first goal right after scoring and then we conceded again right on full-time. We just showed a bit of inexperience in not being able to kill the game off and keep the ball in the last third of the field but hopefully one or two of them will learn from it.

"But it was a good point and if we had got that third goal we would have relaxed a bit and played a bit of football."

With barely a minute of Monday evening's reserve game remaining, Newcastle's unbeaten home record for the season looked to have ended at the eighth attempt.

However striker Carl Finnigan had other ideas, striking his third goal in successive games at Kingston Park to claim a point for Tommy Craig's side.

The 19 year-old from South Tyneside was in the right place to pounce from close range, as Everton 'keeper Iain Turner could only parry Daryl Smylie's fierce shot and the ball ran loose.

We'd earlier gone behind for the fourth home game in a row, as Everton's 17 year-old Nigerian forward Victor Anichebe netted twice in the first half - questions being asked of our defence on both occasions.

The second effort in particular looked to be a fatal blow to our hopes of mounting a comeback, coming just six minutes after midfielder Matty Pattison had rattled the Toffee's crossbar with a 20-yard thunderbolt.

However we did get some reward for our efforts and set up an interesting second half when Pattison struck again on 40 minutes and his effort from distance nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the Everton net.

After the break both sides struggled to create goalscoring opportunities, although Harper was forced into a early stop to deny substitute Kissock.

United handed a reserve debut to striker James Troisi and the young Australian looked bright and eager, his persistence almost opening up a shooting chance on 78 minutes.

With time running out though, Finnigan struck to claim a deserved point, in front of a watching Graeme Souness and Dean Saunders.

Also spotted at Kingston Park were Lee Clark and Glenn Roeder.
