We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"We could have been three or four up before Leeds scored their first goal, but we ended up paying the price for missed chances.

"It wasn't the best of pitches but we rolled our sleeves up and gave a good account of ourselves.

"I am pleased with the result yet maybe a little disappointed not to have scored a few more.

"But it is usually the case when you don't take chances that the other team go up the other end of the park and score instead."

Kris miss time

Magpies Defender Kris Gate rattled the crossbar four minutes from time but it was honours even in our last reserve game of the year as we left the South Leeds Stadium with a 2-2 draw.

A sticky pitch didn't help our cause but Tommy Craig's side should have had too much for the Leeds second string, who had former Newcastle Academy players Ben Smith and Tomi Ameobi in their ranks.

Jermaine Wright returned Caig's punch back into the net to put Leeds ahead on 15 minutes, before Michael Chopra won his one on one with 'keeper Smith to make it all square just before the half hour.

Five minutes later the home side regained the lead when Ben Parker took Walton's centre from the right and steered the ball past a static Caig - the 'keeper looking accusingly at the defence in front of him.

But back came United minutes later when Carl Finnigan's low shot looked to have crossed the line via home defender Simon Madden, the chance being created by a  strong run from Matty Pattison that took him past two opponents.

After the first half goal glut things were less noteworthy after the break until both sides raised the tempo in the final minutes to try and force a winner.

Caig made a couple of stops to deny Leeds, while Ameobi unwittingly diverted one goal bound effort from a home colleague off course.

And at the other end a Finnigan shot and Huntington header were our best chances, aside from Gate's 86th minute shot on to the crossbar, after he had been played in by Chopra.
