An uneventful Northumberland Senior Cup tie at a chilly Whitley Park on Monday saw our second string advance to the Second Round stage with the minimum of fuss. With 'keeper Tim Krul making just one save all night, once the Magpies took the lead just before the half hour mark it was always going to be a matter of how many they would score. Having turned out for Carlisle's reserve side on Wednesday, Marc Walton returned to the attack for Newcastle and netted from close range on 27 minutes following a Brittain corner. That scoreline stayed unchanged until five minutes after the break, when our constant pressure resulted in Carl Finnigan nodding home substitute Alan O'Brien's left wing cross. Despite the one-way traffic however that was being prompted by O'Brien and Brittain on either flank, a third goal failed to arrive until the closing stages of the second half. Another low Brittain centre from the right on 83 minutes found substitute James Troisi and the Australian-born 17 year-old netted tidily with a rising shot, to mark his debut at reserve level and seal a low -profile 3-0 victory. PS - former Newcastle junior Roy Gordon appeared as a second half sub for the visitors. Biffa |
