Tommy Craig said: "It's difficult for Michael (Chopra) because sometimes he is a little bit selfish in front of goal, but who can blame him when he finishes like that? "There were chances all night, but Michael performed well and his last goal was different class. "We had experience with Lee Clark in the team and Michael, who showed us what he can do with his goals. With that backbone in the team the younger players were able to flourish. "Michael got a hat-trick and he will get all of the headlines, but Kris Gate also did very well and Steve Harper made his presence felt at the back too. "I think overall we are happy everybody put their best foot forward and denied Albion space from the first whistle. "Once the first goal went in we never let go of the game and there were a lot of gritty performances out there for us."
Baggies reserve coach Gary Shelton commented: "The final goal summed up the night when a mix-up between Thomas Gaardsoe and Jeff Forsyth allowed Chopra to complete his hat-trick.
Four years to the day that he made his Magpies reserve bow, the striker named Rocky by his parents delivered a knockout punch to a weak Albion reserve side at Kingston Park on Monday evening. It took Michael Chopra barely two minutes to register his fifth goal in as many second string games, as he profited from Robbie Elliott's touch on a Martin Brittain free kick to fire home. And ten minutes later it was Brittain again down the right doing the prompting, his strong run allowing Shanks to centre for Chopra to beat the 'keeper with a low effort. With the Baggies barely capable of getting within sight of Harper's goal, Marc Walton was next to get in on the scoring act, shooting home from inside the box. 3-0 up with only a quarter of the game gone, Walton came close with efforts from distance on 28 and 34 minutes, but there was no further scoring before the interval. As might be expected, the visitors rallied briefly in the opening stages of the second half, although Gary Shelton's side never looked like getting back into the game. It took until the 67th minute for the goals to flow again, Chris Farman's fine cross being headed home for a rare goal from Robbie Elliott. And Elliott almost struck again two minutes later, his fine first-time volley being palmed away by visiting 'keeper Luke Daniels. Walton then blasted narrowly wide on 71 minutes and with the clock running down we seemed to have stuck at four. However in the final minute of normal time, Chopra was lurking after Gate's forward run was only partially blocked by a defender and the in-form striker produced a finely judged chip over the 'keeper, to complete his hat trick and send the small crowd home happy.
