Newcastle's penultimate reserve game of the season was played at an almost deserted Kingston Park on Thursday afternoon, in front of just 89 spectators - and a bus load of school children.

In a game that the Magpies dominated throughout, Carl Finnigan opened the scoring on 10 minutes, shooting home after a good run from Atkin down the right.

And the striker almost doubled his tally at this level for the season 8 minutes later, seeing his shot deflected narrowly wide of the post.

With Newcastle enjoying the majority of possession further goals always looked likely and Finnigan again threatened on 29 minutes, as his pass across the box to strike partner Andrew Carroll was intercepted and cleared.

The best chance fashioned by the visitors came a minute before the break as an unmarked Keith Lowe headed wide of Ben Smith's goal from Clingans's corner.

And there was just time after that for United to swiftly counter, Finnigan charging down an attempted clearance from Wolves 'keeper Carl Ikeme but seeing the rebound pass just wide of the empty net.

Into the second half and Ben Smith was called into action on 51 minutes to hold a rising shot from Chris Cornes.

After having just failed to connect with a Brittain cross in front of goal on 57 minutes, defender Craig Baxter turned provider just after the hour, as his throw in fell to Chris Farman in the area and the United defender made no mistake with a rising half-volley from close range.

Further goals could have followed with Martin Brittain and Jamie McClen both trying to get in on the goalscoring act,

However it was 16 year-old striker Carroll who came closest, netting with a header on 86 minutes from a Terrell cross, only to see an offside deny him a debut goal at this level on the occasion of his first reserve start.

Coach Tommy Craig also gave another 16 year old his first taste of second string football, Robert Cavener coming on at right back for the final ten minutes of the game - the 43rd player to be used by us this season.

Interested onlookers included Academy coaches Peter Beardsley and Kenny Wharton, former goalkeeping coach Simon Smith, Terry McDermott and scout David Mills.

Quakers boss David Hodgson was spotted, while a delegation from SPL new boys Falkirk were in attendance.

Also in the crowd for the first half was a party of schoolchildren who were at Kingston Park for a tour of the stadium, but unexpectedly found themselves watching a match - and enthusiastically cheering on the home side.

Newcastle finish their season next Tuesday, when last season's champions Aston Villa are the visitors to Kingston Park for a 7pm kickoff.

This time out they've relinquished their title to Manchester United but given that we've not beaten Villa at this level since 2002 and have a first team game the following night, our young squad have a sizeable task on their hands.
