We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"To tell the truth, the players did most of the talking and they were refreshingly honest in what they said about the way things had been going.

"They knew that they had not been passing the ball very well in previous games and not making enough chances either. They are a young squad and I was pleased with the way they came back against Leeds."

The head of defender Peter Ramage finally ended our reserve goal famine after 443 minutes, when he broke the deadlock against Leeds at Kingston Park on Monday evening.

And a close-range effort from substitute Marc Walton sealed our first victory in six games - although Leeds protested strongly about the legitimacy of the goal.

Ramage's second goal of the season gave us the lead on 18 minutes after we'd dominated proceedings from the off against a very inexperienced Leeds side who are bottom of the league and reduced to filling their side with Academy youngsters.

Within five minutes though, Magpies 'keeper Tony Caig was forced to tip a Martin Woods shot over his own crossbar in what turned out to be the visitor's only decent attempt on goal.

Somehow Ramage failed to steer the ball home into an empty net from close range on 53 minutes, but with Leeds offering no threat at all, it was a question of whether we could score a second goal for the first time in the league this season.

It duly arrived on 77 minutes, when Marc Walton headed a Brittain cross from the left goalwards and then turned, arms aloft.

In the confusion that followed, it looked as if Walton was appealing for a penalty award for some unspecified reason, but it became apparent that the linesman had in fact indicated a goal to Newcastle.

Confirmation was later obtained that Leeds 'keeper Coyles had been standing behind his goal line when he blocked Walton's header, a decision that the County Antrim-born 19 year old took great exception to - being booked for hoofing the ball out of the ground before play resumed.

For Walton, it was his first reserve goal since his double strike beat Whitley Bay in the Senior Cup final at St.James' Park in May 2003.

So, in the end an easy victory - although quite where we would have gone if we hadn't won this match doesn't bear thinking about.

The next home game against Manchester United promises to be rather more testing, the Red Devils having strolled to a 4-0 success last season.
