Attendance: A midweek date and some confusion over the
start time affected the crowd, which looked to be no more than 600 - less than
half the attendance last season. This being Scotland, we were treated to the stomping sounds of the Proclaimers "500 miles" at half time - apparently this is now compulsory at all outdoor events north of the border. |

"They were a good side with a lot of excellent players but it was a
good workout for us. Again we created a lot of chances but failed to take
them and we could have been 3-0 up at half-time - we know we have a
problem up front and we lack pace in that department so that's why we're
still looking for other strikers, but they are not easy to come by".

Success in Dumfries for Tommy Craig's side at the third attempt after draws on their previous two pre-season visits.
As usual Queen of the South provided spirited
opposition and included former United reserve Tommy English in their starting
lineup at left back.
United took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game, winger Scott
Marshall converting from 15 yards with a crisp shot via an upright on 11
minutes.
The home side had numerous chances to level,
but some poor finishing and one good stop from Tony Caig maintained our
advantage at the interval.
And the lead was doubled barely two minutes into the second half when Martin
Brittain's free kick was deflected past the Queens 'keeper by defender Chris
Scott, who had been guilty of the foul. Scott has recently joined Queens
after being released by.....Sunderland.
Brittain also laid on the third goal after 64 minutes, when his corner was headed in by the unchallenged Lewis Guy.
Next to show was Guy Bates who tested Scotland
U21 goalkeeper Craig Samson with a shot from an acute angle but couldn't repeat
his goalscoring feat at the same end of the ground in 2003.
The Doonhamers did get some reward their efforts, when substitute Stephen Payne
crashed home a fine swerving effort from distance on 72 minutes with almost his
first touch after coming on. His arrival had seen Tommy English push forward
into a more familiar midfield role and Queens did conjure up a couple of further
chances in the closing stages, but without causing Caig any worries.
