Those shootout failures and successes in full: Failures: 04.11.1971 Pecsi Dozsa - Fairs Cup Successes: 28.09.1971 Hearts - Texaco Cup
For the second game in a row, United's
fate was decided by a penalty shootout and in stark
contrast to the showing in Bangkok, we were absolutely flawless. A
left wing corner was headed on by one- time toon target Fan
Zhiyi to Desailly and he
placed his header over the head of Elliott and into Harper's net. United looked to win in it after that, with Shearer guilty of a poor finish on 68 minutes after directing his header from 6 yards wide of the goalkeeper but also past the post. And four minutes later Gary Speed had a long-range effort which passed narrowly over the bar. Unlike the Thailand game there were no late scares on the United goal, although Bramble became the second Newcastle player of the tour (along with Bowyer) to be cautioned for a foul in the last minute.
