For the second game in a row, United's fate was decided by a penalty shootout and in stark contrast to the showing in Bangkok, we were absolutely flawless.

United lined up in at the Hong Kong Stadium in black and white, with Kitchee clad in a Lazio-type light blue kit.

As expected, former Premiership players Marcel Desailly and Fabrizio Ravanelli lined up for the home side for this United Christian Medical Service Charity Challenge.

And after Shearer and Ravaneilli had both put shots wide in the opening ten minutes of the half, it was Frenchman Desailly putting his temporary employers ahead on 14 minutes with a looping header.

A left wing corner was headed on by one- time toon target Fan Zhiyi to Desailly and he placed his header over the head of Elliott and into Harper's net.

For the second game in succession, Newcastle looked to the referee for a penalty decision but none was forthcoming on the half hour, after Bowyer was dumped over in the area after running on to a Shearer through ball.

And five minutes later United opened up the Kitchee defence when Robert tricked inside the full back, but with Shearer waiting for a pass on the right hand side of the goal, the French winger elected to shoot and saw his effort blocked.

However the last decent opportunity of the half fell to the home side, with Ravanelli bringing a fingertip save out of Harper in the 39th minute after powering in a drive.

The second half saw Milner level for the Magpies on 63 minutes, as he took Ameobi's ball in from the right and steadied himself before firing home a fine low effort from 22 yards.

United looked to win in it after that, with Shearer guilty of a poor finish on 68 minutes after directing his header from 6 yards wide of the goalkeeper but also past the post.

And four minutes later Gary Speed had a long-range effort which passed narrowly over the bar.

Unlike the Thailand game there were no late scares on the United goal, although Bramble became the second Newcastle player of the tour (along with Bowyer) to be cautioned for a foul in the last minute.
