Newcastle's Reserves were able to avenge November's 3-1 reverse at St. Andrews by beating Birmingham's second string by the same score at Archibald Stadium on Monday night. A young side comfortably beat the Blues with goals from Martin Brittain, Matty Pattison and Carl Finnigan, the visitor's consolation coming from Carl Motteram 12 minutes from time. Brittain put Tommy Craig's side in front after 32 minutes after Finnigan had played in Lewis Guy who laid the ball to his right for Brittain to crash into the roof of the net from 14 yards. It was 2-0, three minutes before the break when Brittain and Kris Gate combined down the right and when Finnigan tried to turn inside the box the ball dropped for Pattison to score into the left corner of the net. Finnigan got United's third in the 56th minute when Guy cushioned a Brittain cross for Finnigan to stroke the ball past City keeper Ian Bennett. The visitor's goal came in the 78th minute when Motteram rose to head in a corner past Steve Harper in the United goal. Reports |
