"We managed to get ourselves in front but didn't
get the second until injury time.
"In fact it was a good run out for the experienced players and also for the
youngsters. They all got a game under their belts. Everyone came through
OK."
Our Pontins league side secured their first win of 2004
and a first double of the season after overcoming basement side Doncaster Rovers
thanks to second half goals from Lee Bowyer and Andy Ferrell on
Thursday afternoon.
Among a small crowd taking in the action on a sunny afternoon were Sir Bobby
Robson, John Carver and Freddy Shepherd. And they didn't have a lot to get
excited about in the first half, with only a Bowyer free kick wide of the post
and two long-range shots from Bridges that barely tested the Donny 'keeper
worthy of note.
Things improved after the break, with both Ambrose and Elliott trying their luck
with shots in the opening moments of the second half.
And it was Bowyer, making the second appearance at reserve level after
injury, who opened the scoring on 57 minutes - his first goal at any level for
the club.
Ameobi was the provider, picking up the ball and making progress down the
Newcastle left, before pulling back a low cross from the byline for Bowyer to
tap home with ease from close range at the far post.
Rovers rallied and forced two memorable saves from Adam Collin in the Newcastle
goal on 70 and 73 minutes, his opposite number in the visitor's net denying
Ferrell two minutes later with a double stop.
However, it was Ferrell who sealed the victory in the first minute of
added time, netting his fourth goal of the season to become joint top scorer in
this team with the man who supplied him with the centre, substitute Lewis Guy.
